Without Work Due To Covid, Top Hollywood Stylist Launches Glamhive Virtual Style Summit – Forbes

An industry turned upside down by the pandemic, fashion is desperately struggling to find its footing amid the global shutdown. Retailers like Neiman Marcus and J. Crew are filing for chapter 11 while many brands struggle to stay afloat. Among the hardest hit in the industry are those who work as part of the gig economy—the freelancers who work without salary or benefits.

Top Holllywood stylist Tara Swennen along with Stephanie Sprangers, the founder of the online styling portal Glamhive, have seen work completely dry up for themselves and their colleagues for the foreseeable future. With red carpets and photo shoots cancelled indefinitely, they have no idea when work will return.

So they got together and founded the Glamhive Virtual Style Summit. An all-day, online, ticketed event featuring 18 panels taking place on May 9, the summit is born as a platform to inform and educate its audience, but also as a revenue stream for its organizers and panel members. All of the people that are involved, from its founders to its participants, will make a cut of the tickets they are able to sell as well as a part the whole. 15% of ticket sales will be donated to the hunger relief organization, Feeding America.

“Most of the stylists I’ve spoken to are at a complete standstill. There are the few odds and ends where people have been able to pick up an interesting job, but that’s it,” says Swennen, whose clients include A-listers like Kristen Stewart, Allison Janney and Matthew McConaughey. “So we have no choice but to use our virtual platforms, our brands, and our names to pivot.”

“We wanted to get us all together as a community and talk abut things we all need and want to talk about,” says Swennen. “And it was the perfect opportunity to try to make some money and feed our families.”

The 50-plus speakers will talk on a range of topics that range from pertinent topics like sustainability and launching your own business, to masterclasses on set etiquette and how to work with demanding clients, to intimate talks from the likes of Kendra Scott (No. 40 in Forbes America’s Self-Made Women list) and Rebecca Minkoff, co-founder of her eponymous label who share their founder stories. Other speakers representing Hollywood’s fashion elite including, Johnny Wujek (Katy Perry), Jessica Paster (Emily Blunt), Ilaria Urbinati (Donald Glover), Jeanne Yang (Jason Momoa), Jen Rade (Angelina Jolie), and Micaela Erlanger (Lupita Nyong’o).

Virtual attendees can purchase all-day tickets to watch the entire event, or can purchase single event tickets to watch specific speakers.

Swennen reached out to activist Livia Firth in support, who committed to partnering with Swennen to help spread the word through her organization EcoAge, known for starting the Green Carpet and for their commitment to providing sustainability solutions for brands and their supply chains.

“This was an idea to help my fellow stylists who are all out of work currently due to Covid,” says Swennen. “A lot of us still are wondering what is going to happen to us.”
