Global PC shipments grow as remote working and online classes rise, say analysts – Times of India

The global PC market has seen a rise in the shipments in the second quarter of 2020, after witnessing one of the worst quarters in Q1, according to both IDC and Gartner.
Speaking about the report by IDC first, this suggests that the PC market has witnessed a 11.2% year over year growth in shipments with global shipments reaching 72.3 million units.
The report by Gartner has estimated that the worldwide PC shipments totalled 64.8 million units in this quarter clocking a 2.8% rise from the second quarter of 2019.
According to both research firms, the reason for the rise in shipments comes as supply chains restore and increase in demand as remote working and online classes are becoming part of people’s lives.
“The strong demand driven by work-from-home as well as e-learning needs has surpassed previous expectations and has once again put the PC at the center of consumers’ tech portfolio,” said Jitesh Ubrani research manager for IDC’s Mobile Device Trackers. On the same lines, Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner also said, “mobile PC growth was particularly strong, driven by several factors including business continuity for remote working, online education and consumers’ entertainment needs.”
As per IDC’s data, the market was led by HP with a 25% market share with a 17.7% growth annually. Lenovo was a close second with a 24.1%. On the other hand, the report by Gartner has suggested that both Lenovo and HP shared the number one position. As per Gartner’s data, Lenovo was the market leader at the end of the second quarter with 25% share and HP was at second with a 24.9% market share. Together, they accounted for half of PC shipments in the second quarter of 2020, up from 46.6% in the second quarter of 2019, the report added.
