Liverpool employees ‘should be allowed to keep working from home’ – Liverpool Echo

Liverpool workers are yet to be convinced that this is the right time to go back into the office.

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced he wants people to return to work if they can.

But while ECHO readers agreed that there was no reason not to be working as the pandemic eases, many questioned the idea that they needed to go back to the office to do so.

Angela Jones said: “Depends on if you’re vulnerable to the virus. My sister is classed as extremely clinically vulnerable.

“Thankfully she can work from home, and is under no pressure to return to her office whatsoever.”

Ebony Lilly-Anne Kami said: “This pandemic has proven to us that many of the jobs people said couldn’t be done from home, can in fact be done from home.

“So whilst this is going on I think it’s best to carry on what we have been doing and if your job involved activities that cannot be carried out from home then fair enough, go back to work.

“If you can work from home though you should stay at home.”

And Stuart Thompson said: “Why do I need to go back to an office crammed in with 300 people like battery hens, while I can adequately work from home more productively on the laptop they gave me?”

The official Government advice is still “work from home if you can”, but Mr Johnson has said people should be talking to their bosses about “looking to come back to work in a safe way”.

Others questioned the timing of the PM’s suggestion, given parents who have been home schooling through lockdown now face more childcare issues with the summer holidays.

Angie Wratten said: “Can’t go back to work till schools go back, can’t afford childcare as need to work to make money for childcare – why having six weeks off school on holiday when just had 16 weeks off baffles me.”

And Christopher Taylor said: “Pointless sending people back to work whilst the kids are off school, it just causes massive problems for millions of people. Need to open the schools ASAP.”

In his speech, Mr Johnson said: “From August 1 we will update our advice on going to work, we’re going to give employers more discretion and ask employers to make decisions on how their staff can work safely.

“This could be working from home or it could mean making workplaces safe by employing covid safe measures

“We want employers to only ask people to return to their place of work if it is safe.”

Some people pointed out that they couldn’t go back to work while their employer remained banned from operating.

Sean Chaplin said: “I work in special effects. Get live entertainment, theatres and concerts going again. Then I can go back to work.”

And Claire Davies said: “Get public transport back to full service – might help people get to work, we don’t all drive.”

Some said that they had worked throughout the pandemic, while others described going back with new social distancing measures in place.

Tim Mckinneley said: “Been back three weeks now, still social distancing but believe it or not it is great to be back at work.”
